I was raised listening to Metal, rock, and country...

country is either laughably bad or actually decent.
Metal ranges from awesome to incomprehensibly stupid. Screamo sucks, thrash pretty much sucks, and Heavy metal has some decent bands.

Personally I stick to the Dream Theater/Evanescence side of Metal. People who know what they are doing with their music (Albeit Evanescence only seems to know what they are doing with their vocals

)
I love classical music as well.

In my opinion there are classical pieces that reach everyone.

Janis freaking Joplin, gosh I hate her so much. Her voice is like nails on a chalk board to me, the music she wrote is good... but only when sung by other people.

i think you truly need to listen to bands then Mai. Yes there are bands out there that are making just noise i named a few of them. however I grew up on music and i can listen to anything except for rap. well there are some rap artists that i can listen too, however i primarily listen to a lot of heavy metal music. and i can guarantee i can name some bands from europe that if you truly listened to you would be impressed but of those bands there is one in particular named Kamelot from florida. Yes they are a metal band but you would love Khan's voice. Another is Nightwish from Finland fronted by a female named Tarja but who has since left to go solo. But her replacement is just as good listen to the song called Eva from her. Another finnish group is called Sonata Arctica just give them a listen too I really think you would be in shock.
